Want To Start A Social Networking Site? Don't Do This.

Here's a great way to piss off the users of your social networking website: the ostensibly second-rate site Faceparty (Anyone familiar with them? Me neither.) killed a "huge number" of its accounts belonging to users older than 36 recently. (Hold off before you start railing about why anyone over the age of 30 is on such a site anyway—it gets better.) While having your account deleted because you're old would be galling enough, Faceparty's explanation for why they did it is even more infuriating:

"We understand that only a minority of older users are sex offenders, but you must understand that we cannot tell which."

Seriously. This is in reponse to new British law requiring that social networking sites cross check its users against a list of sex offenders' emails. Valleywag says:

"As Faceparty doesn't maintain email records for its users, the Olds-deletion policy is just their way of keeping the Internet safe for teens to continue to 'log [their] asses on.'"

We say: Way to bleed users (and ad dollars), Faceparty!
