As evidenced by our last post, for most people, the iPhone is the sweetest thing since sliced bread. To wit: it's handily trounced pretty much every other smart phone on the market. Ever heard of the HTC Touch Diamond? Didn't think so. But when Google announced this week that they're partnering with T-Mobile to release their own version of a smart phone, things got interesting. While Google's not exactly releasing a smart phone, per say, they've created Android, software that will run on a Blackberry-esque handset called the Dream.
Given that Google's got about as many fanboys and girls out there as Apple (maybe more?), for this week's survey question we asked whether you thought Google's Android/Dream phone could take a legitimate swipe at the iPhone. And for you diehard iPhone users, we asked whether the Android software had piqued your interest - even just the tiniest bit.
Not surprisingly, Google's got your attention, although you're cautiously optimistic. Says reader benpirie:
"Can't say this has blunted my iPhone enthusiasm too much, but that would have to have been one heck of a fuzzy, 42 second, soundless video to do much damage. At the same time, my affinity for things Google will probably justify waiting until October to see what this thing can actually do. As someone who prefers "sleek" and "user-friendly" to "robust multitasking," the Dream will have a pretty high standard to meet."
iPhone-toting Reader Richard, on the other hand, was a little more excited about Android's potential:
"The exciting thing about Android is that it'll all be open source. Meaning it'll be, if Google keeps it up, the Linux of smartphones. A Google-backed Linux associated with hip devices. That's awesome.
I have a first-gen iPhone. I might break contract if Android actually does what it promises."
Better watch your back, Apple.
