It's Friday! Which means it's time for happy hour—and beer. Lots of beer. Which brings us round to this week's survey question: we asked whether you care that InBev a (GASP!) Belgian company has acquired Anhesuer-Busch, who makes the good ol' American beers that some of you will probably be swilling tonight, like Bud Light.
First a little context: since the news broke the Belgian company purchased the St. Louis-based brewer, there were immediately a spate of articles proclaiming that Americans were mad. CNN features stories like, "Foreign-owned Bud a wound to Americana," while newspapers ran articles proclaiming, "It's the selling of America." CNBC even ran a whole hour-long program last night called, "American Originals: Budweiser." So does the purchase of an American beer by a Belgian brewing company—who, by the way, says they're not changing the formula or anything else—really make a difference?
Not so you much, you said. While there's articles aplenty claiming that people will not longer drink Bud Light/Bud/Other Anheuser products now that it's Belgian-owned, most of you said you don't drink it to begin with—and that even if you did, it doesn't matter who owns it.
Reader Richard poses an interesting question, though. Since, apparently, there are Americans who care that Anheuser is now foreign-owned, he asks, "I wonder what this means for other nasty beer companies, like PBR and Lone Star, that are still American-owned?"
Our guess? Nothing. People will likely forget in a few weeks that the beer they're drinking is American, Belgian, or anything but something to knock back at the bar.
And personally, we prefer InBev's Stella anyway.
