Does anyone else find all the recent articles pushing small business survival tips annoying too? Like you couldn't figure out to revise your business plan on your own? In case you've somehow managed to avoid them, we're talking about stories like this, this, and this.
It's not that the idea is a bad one. As an entrepreneur, who doesn't want all the help they can get? They problem is the tips aren't useful. (And, yeah, we realize we're guilty of pushing some of them as well - guilty as charged). The thing is, if you've actually managed to get a business off the ground and are operating it with some success, then you're already familiar with the "new" concepts that MSNBC and the Financial Times are offering as advice.
So, for today's Top Five, we've rounded up a handful of the more obnoxious survival tips making the rounds. Please include any offenders you've heard in the comments section below:
"Stay positive!"
This is like telling someone that the sky is falling - fast - and then suggesting that you all go out for ice cream.
"Slash expenses!"
Why thanks, Captain Obvious!
"Make sure you have an emergency or rainy day fund!"
And if you don't?
"Cut out all unnecessary costs or excesses!"
If you hadn't figured out to do this earlier than, well, now, your business was already in trouble anyway.
"Don't depend on lines of credit! Cash is king!"
As best we can tell, we couldn't depend on lines of credit even if we wanted to, because they're nonexistent right now. And if we had cash, we wouldn't need the credit to begin with, would we?
