This Week In Start-Up History: Disney.

Hey everybody, things aren't so bad! This week, the company that spawned the "happiest place on Earth" (or most frightening, depending on your childhood memories) was founded. On October 16, 1923, brothers Walt and Roy Disney started the Walt Disney Company. Since then, Disney has gone on to become one of the biggest Hollywood studios (or so Wikipedia tells us), as well as the operator of more than eleven theme parks, television stations including ABC, ESPN, and the eponymous Disney Channel, and popular websites like Club Penguin. They also launched the careers of fame balls, that is, talents like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and, most recently, Miley Cyrus. In other words, they basically control the world.

Interestingly enough, and in light of everything that's happen on Wall Street the past few weeks, Disney is one of the companies that figures into the Dow Jones Industrial Average. And to think, this is what started it all:
