Retail Sales Are Up - At Wal-Mart.

If you manage to put aside the fact that discount clothier Steve & Barry's filed for Chapter 11 yesterday, things looks somewhat rosy(ier) for retailers this month. Sales at retail stores rose higher than expected this month, reports the New York Times today —with some analysts calling the rise in sales "eye-popping." While that's great for the health of the retail market in general, the stores posting the greatest sales were—you guessed it—bargain retailers like Wal-Mart and Costco. Given that a new survey says that optimism is down at small businesses this month, it appears that it's primarily big retailers who enjoyed the boost.

With the insane price of gas, loss of jobs, and an overall higher cost of living, it's no surprise that cheap superstores like Wal-Mart are benefiting.
