There's no question that the bottled water industry is one of the most saturated markets out there. There's vitamin waters, filtered waters, flavored waters, electrolyte enriched waters—if you can dream it, it exists. But, one new start-up thinks they can penetrate the market with a fresh twist on an old business plan: Tap'D NY has bottled New York City tap water. And here's the most unusual part: they're only selling the water in NYC.
While it sounds crazy (why pay for something you can get for free?), the company says there is method to their madness. They're hoping to appeal to green consumers and locavores (that is, people who buy, eat, and drink local goods) with their reusable bottles and homegrown drinking water. Says their manifesto (yeah, they've got a manifesto) on their website:
"They say you need French water, Arctic water, tropical spring water—anything but your water, the kind that comes from the same place you do. It's time for a new way of thinking drinking; a WATER DRINKER'S MANIFESTO for the new age."
We appreciate that Tap'D NY is trying to appeal to shoppers who want to go local. And we think it's equally smart that they're trying to address consumers' concerns over the waste created by thousands of water plastic bottles (Reuse ours! Repeatedly!). But can they really persuade consumers to buy what they can already get for free from their faucets? We're not convinced.
But that's just our two cents. What do you guys think?

No way. If they were distributing to Oregon, heck, I'd buy it, cause I have a husband who loves New York and would probably really think it's a sweet deal to be drinking New York water in Oregon. Seems pointless to not distribute to other parts of the country. Sounds like someone was drunk one night, needed a drink out of the tap, refilled his used Dasani water bottle with tap water and was like "EUREKA!"
I'm not falling for it.
