So far the two start-up conferences going down this week- TechCrunch and DemoFall—haven't done much other than make our head hurt with all the celeb-fawning, grandstanding, and ego-stroking going on. Nonetheless, these things are about start-ups and giving entrepreneurs the chance to shill their business plans to investors—and more than a few cool companies have cropped up at the conferences.
Today, Demo actually announced its best presenters (it's like best in show, but for geeks) with top honors going to Plastic Logic, a company that makes a "plastic display book reader." Similar to the Kindle, Plastic Logic's device supports electronic books, magazines, newspapers, PDFs, and other documents. The different is that it's designed specifically for business users—and it's whip thin. The reader is the same size, weight, and thickness of a pad of notebook paper, and it has a large touch screen.
