RIP: The Ford, Zune, and Meetro Edition

This week there was more chatter about businesses getting funded than there was flops. But since we're like that relative who likes to pick at everything that's wrong with your life, here's our round-up of this week's failures:

-Niche social networking may not have found its step quite yet. One of the "first location-based social network tools" (read: meet people in your neighborhood right now) Meetro, shut down this week. CEO Paul Bragiel gives a "post-mortem" rundown on what went wrong, here.

-Okay, so it's not exactly a company, and it's not exactly dead, but TechCrunch reports this morning that retailer GameStop is dumping Zune, Microsoft's answer to the iPod. GameStops says that there's no demand, which is pretty obvious considering that Microsoft has sold only 2 million Zunes since its launch in late 2006. Compare that to Apple, who sold 10.6 million iPods just in the last quarter, according to TechCrunch. That may explain why there's a movement afoot to kill the Zune.

-Ford ruled out any hope of profitability this year or next, announcing Thursday that they were dramatically cutting production of pickups and SUVs. Via the Washington Post. Anyone surprised?
