Play With Copyrighted Material, Get Burned.

Here's a word or warning for wantrepreneurs: tread lightly when you're building a business that revolves around ripping off copyrighted goods.

This morning Facebook finally decided to take down Scrabulous, the not-at-all veiled Scrabble rip-off that's become one of the social networking site's most popular applications. The decision to pull the app came after Hasbro, who holds the rights to Scrabble in the U.S., slapped the game's two India-based developers with a lawsuit claiming copy right violations. Yesterday, in the middle of the night, the Scrabulous developers apparently decided—for the time being—that it was smarter for them to take the game down in North America than to keep thumbing their nose at Hasbro. It's still available elsewhere.

Despite that, it may not be all bad for the games developers. Hasbro actually offered them a fat check back in March, which, according to the Silicon Valley rumor mill, was turned down by the duo because the offer wasn't big enough. Of course, now that a law suit is the table, and that Hasbro has launched their own Facebook Scrabble app, that deal may be dead.

We don't feel too sorry for them though. After all, if you're blatantly ripping off copy righted material, you have to expect that that the plug will get pulled one day...right?
