-AOL (yes, they still exist) announced plans this week to close a slew of its businesses. Those on the chopping block include Bluestring (photo sharing), Xdrive (online storage), and AOL pictures (online photo album). What we want to know is whether anyone cares?
-Redlasso, a start-up video site that where bloggers can post and grab television clips, closed down its site this week not for lack of money—but due to a lawsuit filed by Fox and NBC who back the rival site Hulu. The site has become increasingly popular among bloggers since it launched eight months ago, however it's tussled with the big studios since the beginning. Just last month, Fox, CBS, and NBC slapped the company with a Cease and Desist, which they ignored. Apparently this new lawsuit got their attention.
-It's been a tough week for warm and fuzzy bank Washington Mutual. The company's shares plummeted after analysts voiced concerns over the company's financial health. While Washington Mutual managed to raise $7 billion in capital last spring, that hasn't placated nervous investors who are concerned about the bank's losses associated with subprime mortgages.
-Like every other airline, Alaska Airlines announced this week that it would be cutting flights and staff as a result of rising fuel costs. Layoffs will happen next month, and the company plans to start reducing flights by early September. This story has been so oft repeated in recent weeks that it almost writes itself.
