Government Hacks Turn Typos Into $5 Million Screw-Up.

Need another reason to hate The Man? We've got one—the Washington Post reports that Uncle Sam accidentally handed out more than $5.7 million in contracts meant for small businesses to a handful of ineligible Fortune 500 companies like John Deere and Dell. While, yes, $5 mill is only a tiny fraction of the total amount the government doles out to small businesses in contracts each year, it's still annoying that companies like Home Depot got cash slated for the little guys.

What really got us though is the not-at-all-surprising reason why the screw-ups happened: lazy typists. Department of the Interior investigators found that "...some government workers 'often click through mindlessly when entering' contract info into the computer system and that if contract officers 'did their job, [errors] wouldn't happen.'"

Seriously? And government bureaucrats wonder why they get a bad rap.
