"Oh Jerry, It's No Longer Your Baby." Ouch! That's the headline accompanying a scathing open letter to Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang that ran in the New York Times this weekend. Word is that it's caused shockwaves to ripple throughout Yahoo, with speculation abounding over Yang's fate. As TechCrunch puts it:
"When blogs and regional newspapers trash Jerry Yang it's one thing. But when the New York Times does it, people really notice. Public lynchings like this are few and far between from that bastion of traditional journalism."
And the piece is damning, to say the least. It catalogues Yang's offenses and mismanagement, which reporter Joe Nocera says include him knowingly screwing shareholders—even though it's the shareholders who made him a billionaire—and effectively dampening Yahoo's future earnings potential.
Nocera wraps ups the article by betting on Yang's fate at Yahoo: "I would be taking odds that your days as Yahoo's C.E.O. are numbered. It'll be better for everyone to have someone in that role who understands who he's supposed to be working for. Wouldn't you agree?"
Snap!
This brings us round to this week's survey question: should Yang step down as Yahoo's CEO? For extra credit, give us your take on what you think may be in store for Yahoo, post its failed Microsoft deal and its new partnership with Google.

I don't know anything about Yang's capacities as a CEO, but if my feelings about Yahoo and their offerings is a reflection, then yeah, he should go. I never use Yahoo. Their pages are cluttered, their search is silly, their hosting service is a sham, never mind their email. Their games service is kind of neat. Maybe they should try to do one thing really well instead of crapping out doing so many things.

Jerry Yang should have been given the boot long ago. Back in November of 2007, Yang nearly purgered himself (or actually did commit purgery) before Congress when questioned on Yahoo's act of disclosing the identity of bloggers to the Chinese government. After that debacle, Yang has done little to repair the company's image. He's just another smug CEO with no direction.
