Cuil Not That Cool.

This week we asked for your take on the new search engine Cuil and whether it—or any other new-fangled search engine—would ever break your allegiance to Google.

Surprisingly, the jury was split.

Half of you said that you're taking a wait-and-see approach to new search engines like Cuil that crop up. As reader Richard noted, "Of course it's not at Google's level yet. It's barely useful right now. But I can see it being at least bigger than Yahoo." And while reader Mahesh was not exactly a fan of Cuil, he did mention that he'll probably defect from Google when something better arises:

"Google will eventually fall prey to online entropy...So when Google stagnates, I'll gladly switch my allegiance to an engine that beats the champ for user friendliness, ease of search, and overall simplicity."

The rest of you were less optimistic about another search engine's ability to ever knock Google out of its throne. Said reader benpirie:

"I think it will be extremely difficult to top Google in a couple of areas. Comprehensive, accurate results and simplicity in displaying them is one, I just don't see how to do it better (although I suppose if I did, I would probably be working for them). The other is in integration of other functions into the search, e.g. links to Google Maps when searching addresses or to Google Finance when searching for securities. Until someone can come up with a way to rival the breadth of Google's competencies and find a way to integrate them better, they will remain the name to beat."

Of course, the ultimate measure of a search engine's greatness is how many relevant results it turns up when you search your own name. Several of you noted that Cuil failed on that count too. And if a search engine can't stroke your ego, what good is it?
