Crunch Time Has A New Meaning.

There's no question that health care is ridiculously expensive for small business owners and their employees. It's such a problem that some states are stepping in to ease the burden for small companies through tax cuts and access to state-run programs reports a NY Times cover story today. Great idea!

Things start to get weird though when some companies try to find their own way to cut health-related costs. One strategy some small firms have adopted is encouraging weight loss and fitness competitions among their employees. While that's okay (sort of), other small businesses have actually started providing in-office workouts. If you're thinking that that sounds kind of cool, think about this: squats with your boss.

Sufficiently freaked out?

While we're not insensitive to the fact that health care costs are high and that finding ways to cut those expenses is smart—are calisthenics in the break room really the answer? About the last thing most people want to do is spend more time with the same people who they work with all day. And wouldn't these sessions only work if they were mandatory? Chances are that the people who would show up are the same ones who probably already get some exercise anyhow.

Worst of all? Spying your VP in spandex. There, we said it.

I'm pretty sure this has been done in Japan for decades. What about just banning Doritos from the workspace?
