At Least Someone's Making Some Money Off Web 2.0

Is anyone else surprised that "micro-blogging" site Twitter still doesn't have a revenue model despite that fact that they just nailed another round of funding? While it's unlucky for them that they haven't figured it out yet, it hasn't stopped their members from devising ways to cash in off their Twitter feeds, says Valleywag. Like this guy—Ian Shafer, the CEO of Deep Focus, an interactive marketing agency we haven't heard of either, who auctioned off a sponsorship of his Twitter profile and feed last week. The auction pulled in $1,082 and change. Winner Metacafe, a YouTube-type video site, now has their logo and tagline emblazoned all over his account. And he's just one guy with only 500 buddies.

While, yes, earning $1K doesn't exactly count as raking in the big bucks (and doesn't come close to setting VCs' hearts aflutter), and, yes, it's kind of like what MySpace has tried without great success, Shafer says on his blog that his intention was to get people thinking about ways to monetize sites like Twitter:

"From my perspective, the reason for me doing this was clear - to start a conversation, get marketers looking at emerging technologies, and collaborate on finding ways to monetize them. As I've said before, consumer behavior is evolving faster than advertising..."

Given that he's has probably made more money off Twitter than Twitter has itself, maybe they should tune into his Tweets. In the meantime, excuse me while I head over to eBay to make a quick buck.
